Sentinel Announces Winners of Inaugural Lightkeeper Award

RALEIGH, NC—Sentinel Risk Advisors this week announced the recipients of the risk management firm’s first-ever Lightkeeper Award, an annual recognition of clients that have elevated safety and loss control programs to superior standards.

The winners include The Tammy Lynn Center, a Raleigh-based nonprofit serving adults and children with disabilities; Precision Networks, a Morrisville telecommunications infrastructure provider; and M.R. Williams, one of the Southeast’s largest wholesale distributors for convenience stores, based in Henderson, NC.

Sentinel’s Chief Operating Officer, Nicole Winkle, said the three winners have done all the things you’d expect to win a safety award, from reducing workplace injuries and claims, to embracing a culture of safety at all levels of the company. What is uncommon about all three, Winkle said, is that they’ve taken safety and loss control from a checklist of tactics, to a long-term strategic plan that is engrained at all levels of corporate operations.

“As risk managers and advisors, it is incredibly gratifying to see our partnership with clients grow from a reactive plan to mitigate losses that have already occurred, to a proactive approach that sees risk as an operational tool that can be optimized and leveraged for longterm benefit,” said Winkle. “The winners of our inaugural Lightkeeper award epitomize excellence in implementing a culture that values the balance of risk and reward.”

The awards will be presented by chief safety and loss control expert Dana Vorholt, who, as part of Sentinel’s Risk Performance Group, works in partnership with Sentinel clients to improve  workplace and occupational safety standards, training programs, compliance, and more.

About the Lightkeeper Award Winners

When your mission is to provide hands-on services to disabled children and adults, there is a lot that could go wrong, particularly with regard to on-the-job injuries. The Tammy Lynn Center is exceedingly proactive at every level of safety operations, from the training they impart to employees, to the back-to-work program that gets injured workers treated quickly and back to their normal duties, to their engagement of Sentinel’s Risk Performance Group as a part of their ongoing safety and loss control program. Add to all of this the fact that The Tammy Lynn Center has experienced a 22 percent reduction in workers’ compensation claims in the past 18 months.

All businesses face risks and exposures, but for Precision Networks, Inc., the risk of striking underground utility lines is not only extraordinarily high, it is exceptionally costly whenever it occurs. In spite of this, Precision Networks has managed to reduce these all-too-frequent incidents year after year, leading to a positive effect on their general liaibilty rates and improved loss ratios.

M.R. Williams, Inc., faces a myriad of exposures on any given day, from auto, workers’ compensation, property and crime. Creating a safety and loss program that addresses each of these exposures without adding operational burdens that lead to inefficiency and human resource issues is no small task. Yet, M.R. Williams has demonstrated success at every level of loss control. They are a performance leader within their insurance captive, and recently completed one of the most ambitious safety audits that Sentinel’s Risk Performance Group has ever encountered.
